What is Electronic Check Conversion and how does it work with
your merchant account.
In 2000, consumers wrote nearly 19 billion checks at the point of sale. Checks represented approximately 51% of all transactions.
In 2000, merchant check handling costs and losses totaled more than $23.2 billion dollars.
Electronic Check Conversion (ECC) offers a variety of benefits that include lower check-processing costs, reducing check acceptance risk and increased incremental
revenue for your merchant account.. ECC allows you to accept a customers check at the point of sale (POS) and convert it to an electronic transfer. This makes taking checks as simple and fast as
your credit card processing. The process uses your check number, your account number, and the number that identifies your bank or financial institution. The check itself is not the method of payment. Instead it's just used to help process the information. Merchant
accounts and customers benefit because they can purchase goods or services which they clearly desire as a payment option. For the merchant, electronic payment technology offers an opportunity to reduce bank charges and minimize the risk of fraud.
Electronic Check Conversion Benefits
The benefits of moving to electronic payments include lower processing costs, faster processing, reduced paperwork, and it provides quicker access to funds - all guaranteed. Many
merchant accounts use Electronic Check Conversion to simplify cash management and consolidate bank accounts, since they no longer are required to physically deposit checks at a bank.
How Electronic Check Conversion Works and what equipment you need
With Electronic Check Conversion (ECC), when a consumer pays with a check at the point of purchase,
the cashier scans the check through a MICR Magnetic Ink Character Recognition
(MICR) merchant account terminal, which captures the bank account number, routing information, and serial number. The cashier then stamps the check “VOID” and returns it to the consumer. The customer signs a receipt that authorizes the electronic transaction which also serves as a record of the purchase.
The merchant then uses the information to initiate a debit from the consumer's bank account, which is also electronically processed. The funds are then moved within 48 hours of the purchase. And a complete description of the transaction will appear on the customers next monthly bank statement. Many point-of-sale credit card terminals already incorporate
merchant account check readers.
