What is AVS and how it can help reduce chargebacks and fraud on
your merchant account.
AVS is a service that is built into the authorization process to
assist in preventing fraudulent transactions. The numerical portion of a consumer's address is sent along with the transaction data and is matched against the
cardholder's address on file at the Issuing Bank.. A response code is sent back with the approval (or decline) message that indicates a match or not.
A match or mismatch is simply reported back to the merchant and does NOT result in a transaction
decline, but provides assurance that the shipping address is the
same. The merchant then has the option to contact their customer to confirm the correct address before they ship any goods.
Credit card processing when a card is not present is
very unsecured and the merchants can be held liable for a chargeback
when a card is not present. Make sure that your merchant
account provider informs you how to perform address verification on
all transactions where the customer is not physically presenting the
credit card.
